Cristiano Ronaldo is reported to have played his final FIFA World Cup match following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 tournament, while head coach Roberto Martínez has departed from his position.

According to BBC Sport, Portugal’s World Cup campaign concluded with Ronaldo visibly emotional at the end of the match. The 40-year-old forward, who made his World Cup debut in 2006, is widely expected to have made his final appearance at the tournament.

Roberto Martínez, who served as Portugal’s head coach throughout the competition, is reported to have left his role following the team’s elimination. According to BBC Sport, his performance as coach drew criticism, with some observers describing his tenure during the tournament as ‘pathetic’. The precise circumstances of his departure had not been formally confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) at the time of publication.

Ronaldo participated in six editions of the FIFA World Cup — in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 — without securing the title. His contribution to the Portuguese national team over a period spanning more than two decades is broadly regarded as exceptional.
