According to Yahoo Sports, a comprehensive overview has been published listing the recognised nicknames of 47 national football teams set to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The overview, as reported by Yahoo Sports, documents how participating nations are commonly or officially referred to in international football. Among the most established designations is that of the French national team, traditionally known as ‘Les Bleus.’ The overview also references newer designations, including one team identified under the name ‘The Blue Wave.’
According to the source, 47 of the 48 qualified nations carry a recognised nickname. One participating country is noted as not currently holding an established or official designation of this kind.
The 2026 World Cup will mark the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 competing nations, an expansion from the previous format of 32 teams. This enlargement has resulted in a greater number of countries either making their debut at the tournament or returning after an extended absence from international competition at this level.
